Dynamics GP’s Sunset Is Real. What’s Next? Here’s Microsoft’s Actual Timeline
Microsoft Dynamics GP is being retired.
For businesses still running Dynamics GP, the important question is no longer whether Microsoft is ending the product. It is when the different stages of the Dynamics GP sunset happen, what "end of support" actually means, and what companies should do next.
Microsoft's current timeline, published on its own Dynamics GP lifecycle page, is clear:

The most important date for existing customers is December 31, 2029. That is when Microsoft will stop providing product enhancements, regulatory and tax updates, and technical support for Dynamics GP. Security updates and patches, if needed, are scheduled to remain available through April 30, 2031, according to Microsoft's own announcement of the end of support for Dynamics GP.
There is an important distinction here: Dynamics GP does not simply stop working on January 1, 2030.
The bigger question is what happens when the software your business depends on is no longer being actively supported.
What Does "End of Support" Actually Mean?
Think about your ERP as the backbone of your business. It may hold information about customers, suppliers, products, inventory, purchasing, orders, and finances. It may also connect to dozens of other systems your employees use every day.
When Microsoft stops supporting GP, those systems do not suddenly stop working. But the world around them keeps changing.
Tax rules change. Security threats change. Other software gets updated. Customers expect new experiences. Suppliers change how they share information. Your business adds new sales channels.
Your ERP, meanwhile, is no longer receiving the same level of support from its original developer.
That is the real issue.
Does Dynamics GP Stop Working in 2029?
No.
December 31, 2029 is Microsoft's end-of-support date. It is not a switch that turns GP off.
A company may still be able to run its existing GP system after that date. However, Microsoft will no longer provide product enhancements, regulatory and tax updates, or technical support after December 31, 2029. Security updates and patches, if needed, are scheduled to continue through April 30, 2031.
So the question should not simply be, "Will GP still work?"
A better question is: "Do we want to build the next five or ten years of our business around a system that is no longer being supported?"
For manufacturers and distributors in particular, that question becomes more important since the ERP is often connected to inventory, purchasing, production, suppliers, warehouses, e-commerce, and other operational systems.
What Is Microsoft Recommending?
Microsoft is encouraging Dynamics GP customers to move to its newer cloud products, including Dynamics 365 Business Central. Microsoft's partner network also publishes detailed guidance for moving Dynamics GP data to Business Central, covering the practical steps involved.
For some companies, this will be the right answer.
But replacing an ERP is rarely as simple as moving data from one system to another. Over the years, businesses build processes around their ERP. They connect it to other software, create spreadsheets around it, build supplier and warehouse workflows, and develop internal processes that may not be documented anywhere.
That means replacing the ERP can become a much larger business transformation project than the original software purchase.
Do You Have to Replace Everything?
Not necessarily.
There is another approach that is becoming increasingly interesting: putting an AI-powered operational layer on top of the systems a company already has.
The idea is straightforward. The ERP can continue to hold important information and handle the functions it is good at, while an AI operational layer sits above it and connects it to the rest of the business.
For example, a company could have Dynamics GP connected through an operational layer to its product information system, e-commerce platforms, suppliers, warehouse systems, spreadsheets, and other applications.
Instead of employees constantly moving information between these systems, the operational layer can help understand what is happening and coordinate work across them.
This is where AI is starting to change the way companies think about enterprise software.
AI Is Changing What an ERP Can Do
AI is moving beyond answering questions and generating content. It is increasingly being used to complete actual business tasks.
Microsoft is rolling out first-party AI agents across Dynamics 365, including agents that handle finance reconciliation, and supply chain agents that read vendor communications and manage procurement follow-up.
McKinsey has described a future where AI agents can work across traditional enterprise applications and coordinate business processes end to end, calling it a shift that moves "beyond automating tasks in enterprise resource planning to restructuring enterprise operations."
Deloitte has similarly described how AI agents can sit around an ERP, connecting to back-end systems and using company data to help execute work, while the ERP itself stays "the system of record for trusted data, auditability, and standardized processes."
Gartner has also been describing the move from traditional ERP toward more autonomous systems, an idea it frames as Enterprise Resource Execution, and describes as a shift "from a system of record into a system of continuous execution and intelligence."
The technology is still developing, but the direction is becoming clear: the ERP is moving from being something employees operate manually toward something AI can increasingly operate through.
Could AI Eventually Replace an ERP?
The honest answer is: not completely, at least not today.
Businesses still need reliable financial records, audit trails, permissions, controls, accurate data, and systems that can reliably record transactions. These foundational functions are one reason ERP systems will continue to matter even as AI becomes more capable.
But that does not mean the ERP has to remain the main place where people run the business.
Imagine a different kind of company.
Instead of employees opening an ERP, finding a customer, checking inventory, looking at a supplier record, updating a spreadsheet, creating an order, and then sending an email, they could tell an AI system what they want to accomplish.
For example:
"Make sure this week's orders ship on time. If we're short on inventory, find the best available supplier and prepare the purchase order for approval."
The AI could look across the company's systems, understand what is happening, determine what needs to be done, and carry out the steps it is allowed to take.
The ERP may still exist underneath. But the employee may rarely need to interact with it directly.
That is a very different way of running a company.
The ERP Could Become the Foundation, Not the Interface
This may be where enterprise software is heading.
The ERP could continue to store the company's official financial and operational records. But an AI layer could become the place where people actually interact with the business.
Instead of asking, "Which ERP should we buy?", companies may increasingly ask, "What should our AI operating layer be able to do?"
McKinsey has described a possible future in which ERP becomes "headless," with AI agents mediating, deciding, and executing in place of screen-based transactions, sitting between employees and the underlying systems. The ERP continues to provide reliable records while AI handles more of the interaction and execution.
That does not mean every company will throw away its ERP. It means the ERP may become less visible.
Three Stages of the Transition
The shift can be thought of in three broad stages.
First, ERP-centric operations: the ERP is the system of record, workflow engine, and primary interface.
Second, AI-augmented ERP: the ERP remains in place, but AI helps employees find information, make decisions, and complete tasks.
Third, AI-native operations: AI becomes the primary way people interact with the company's systems and coordinates work across the ERP and everything around it.
The third stage is still developing. But it is the direction OGVI is building toward.
What This Means for Dynamics GP Customers
A company running Dynamics GP now has more than one possible path.
The traditional option is to replace GP with a modern ERP such as Business Central. This can make sense when the company needs a new core system and is prepared for the migration and transformation that comes with it.
Another option is to keep GP as an important system of record while introducing an AI operational layer that connects it to the rest of the business. This allows a company to modernize how work gets done without immediately replacing every system underneath it.
The longer-term option is more ambitious. As AI becomes better at handling complex business processes, more of the work currently done inside ERP systems could move into an AI operational layer. The ERP could remain responsible for the underlying records and controls while AI increasingly handles the work.

For some companies, the answer will be Business Central.
For others, it may be a modern ERP combined with an AI operational layer.
And over time, the answer may become something very different.
The ERP may remain underneath the business, keeping the financial records, data, controls, and history that the company needs. But the AI operational layer could become the place where the actual work happens.
That is why the end of Dynamics GP is about more than replacing an old piece of software. It is an opportunity to rethink how a business should operate in the age of AI.
The question is no longer simply, "What replaces Dynamics GP?"
The bigger question is, "What becomes the operating system for a business when AI can understand, coordinate, and execute the work that once required an ERP?"
That future is not here yet. But it is getting closer.
